Congressman DeFazio's Response
OFFLINE

Posted On 09/26/2011 14:34:13 by Grapevine

I wrote our Congressman Peter DeFazio a letter a few weeks ago regarding national legislation regarding the availability of supplements and the Food & Drug Administration's attempts to regulate supplements.  I know many people who have benefited from the use of vitamins and minerals.

Here is Congressman DeFazio's response:

Thank you for contacting me about defending consumers' access to dietary supplements and natural medicines during the 112th Congress.  I appreciate hearing from you.

I have long been a champion of access to complementary and alternative therapies, including dietary supplements, without Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intrusion. That is why I helped create the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. I also supported the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which liberalized the rules regarding the regulation of dietary supplements. Finally, I am the lead democrat on the Access to Medical Treatment Act, which would allow individuals to use alternative therapies, even when not approved by the FDA, when traditional treatments have failed. Throughout my years in Congress I have joined with Republicans to fight for this common sense idea. You can be sure that this year I will continue to champion American's access to natural and alternative health solutions.

Thanks again for writing.  Please continue to keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Rep. Peter DeFazio
Fourth District, OREGON
